Make the Most of Your Hampton Visit at this Business and Family-Friendly Hotel

Hampton, Virginia is one of those towns that travelers all-too-often passed through on their way to other destinations. But it is also a town whose time has come to be a destination in its own right. Embassy Suites by Hilton Hampton Roads Hotel, Spa and Convention Center with its 295 rooms, is ready and waiting to welcome the influx of new visitors to this charming and active port city.

Simon, Otto and I recently had the pleasure of exploring Hampton’s historical, scenic and culinary attractions during the day, then relaxing at the Embassy Suites in the evening. The entire experience made us wonder why we had waited so long.

Location, Location, Location

The Embassy Suites is an ideal oasis, whether you’re in Hampton on business, a romantic getaway or family vacation. Located within easy walking distance from Hampton Roads Convention Center and Hampton Coliseum, the hotel is also within easy driving distance to the Hampton beaches, museums, restaurants, the port and other popular venues. And if it’s too hot, too cold or raining, you’ll appreciate the covered walkway between the Embassy Suites and the conference center.

Because you’re in an all-suite hotel, it’s easy to unwind and chat with friends or business colleagues in your sitting room, while your scattered clothes and strewn papers remain out of sight behind the bedroom door.

Driving distances are conveniently short to Hampton’s many attractions including, the Virginia Air and Space Center with its compelling IMAX Theater films, Hampton University, Fort Monroe and Buckroe Beach.

Historic Williamsburg, Jamestown Settlement, the American Revolution Museum in Yorktown and Busch Gardens, are 45 minutes, or less, by car, making it possible to bring the kids – and yourself – back for an afternoon nap before continuing your day.

We found the Embassy Suites to be easily accessible from I-64. Had we been flying, it would have been an approximately 20-mile drive in from Norfolk International Airport or the Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport.

Our Experience

Several pleasant surprises greeted us upon our arrival at the Embassy Suites in the late afternoon. When we registered, we were handed a ticket to a free reception that runs daily from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. After dropping our bags in our room, we made our way down to find beverages and snacks available in an open area where people were chatting and having a good time. I have to say, the bartender definitely knew how to make a good Bloody Mary.

The complimentary breakfast was more than ample. With choices of hot and cold items and beverages. We couldn’t resist checking out the omelet station and building our own creations. They were hot and delicious, and I could see how, with a few additions, one could get to dinner without needing much, if anything more. This plans would allow for more time to enjoy Hampton during daylight hours.

Our Room

Our suite was spacious, with a large bathroom and doorways that could accommodate a wheelchair. Upon further inspection, we became aware of other accessibility features: strobe alarms, braille in the elevators, closed-captioned movies available on the room’s TV.  It was clear that people with disabilities were welcome.

The room more than met my minimum criteria with speedy internet, cleanliness, a shower with excellent water pressure and a comfortable bed.

Staying in a suite enabled Simon and me to work without getting in in each other’s way, while still being able to converse. In that respect, it was a little like being at home.

Although we only spent one night at the Embassy Suites, we could see how the extra space, microwave and refrigerator could save an individual or family money on food for several days, with the option of preparing light meals and snacks.

One night at the Embassy Suites in Hampton was enough to convince us that we were on to a good thing. We wouldn’t hesitate to go back for at least one more Bloody Mary.
