Simon, Otto and I spent an all-too-short two days in early December 2015 on Tybee Island, and Hotel Tybee was a perfect fit for the relaxed pace of our surroundings. Our room had a sliding door leading to a small balcony overlooking the uncrowded beach. I fell asleep to the sound of waves rolling on to a bed of soft sand and thinking this is what heaven must sound like. We would have been treated to a spectacular sunrise on the water had we managed to drag ourselves out of our deliciously comfortable bed in time to catch it.

The room itself was clean and spacious. A small refrigerator and microwave presented budget friendly eating options had we been so inclined.

Although Hotel Tybee has an excellent restaurant on site, it didn’t serve breakfast. This was a good thing because we had to walk out of the hotel on a sunny 70-degree morning in order to find a restaurant.

Hotel Tybee

The original hotel was built in 1889 And provided the first accommodation on Tybee Island. Up until this point, short-term visitors had no place to stay.

The hotel burned to the ground and was rebuilt in 1911. Through the ensuing decades, the property changed hands several times, undergoing additions and facelifts along the way. At one time, you could even take a train out to Tybee Island that would drop you off directly in front of the hotel.

In 2014 Linchris Hotel Corporation, a privately owned entity, purchased the hotel, renamed it Hotel Tybee, and began a major renovation of the property.

The Hanover, Massachusetts based company was founded in the 1980s and began purchasing hotels and resorts in the northeast and New England. Hotel Tybee was Linchris’s first venture down south. Today, the corporation owns more than 30 properties, including accommodations in West Virginia, Texas and Florida.

One of the best times to visit Tybee is during the holidays. The island is quiet – perfect for a family destination vacation, a romantic getaway, or a solo retreat for relaxation and reflection.

You can watch the midnight fireworks on the beach New Year’s Eve right outside Hotel Tybee. Then on New Year’s Day, you can watch, or participate in, the annual Polar Plunge.

Short on wheels or a designated driver? No problem. Tybee’s Turtle Taxi Transit – a fleet of golf carts – will take you anywhere on the island for $3 per person.

“One of the many interesting things about Tybee Island,” said David Thomas, Hotel Tybee’s Director of Sales and Marketing, “is that along with the people who regularly come here in the summer, there are people who regularly come here in the offseason.” Small wonder with the wide range of features to occupy mind, body and soul. Here’s a sampling of what you’ll find on Tybee Island year round:
